Gypsum mining cooperative strives to acquire advanced mining equipment

Dowa based Familjsk Women Mining Cooperative Society says it is struggling to acquire advanced equipment to increase production and meet the high demand for chalk and fertilizers.

Treasurer for the cooperative Cecilia Mwenesongole said the emergence of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, which has prompted government to come up with restrictions at work places including social distancing measures, has affected their expansion plans such that they are seeking support to procure bigger machines and scale down on the use of manual labour.  

 She said: “The pandemic has impacted on our plans to expand and acquire bigger machines so that we can increase our production. Even in schools if they say they need 100 boxes of chalk we find out that we are out of stock because we are producing less number of sticks per day though there are a lot of schools in Malawi.”

“We are even failing to meet the demand of chalk from schools that are here in Dowa and also the demand for our fertilizers as they are some farmers who demand up to 200 tones.”

Members of the cooperative use primitive equipment such as hand held hoes and peaks to mine gypsum, and Mwenesongole said this lack of advanced mining equipment is contributing to low production.

Mwenesongole said the cooperative tried to seek assistance from Technical Entrepreneur and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TEVETA) upon being informed that they have extraction and production machines which are not in use.

But she said TEVETA referred them to Ministry of Labour and the Ministry has not yet responded to their letter. The cooperative also met the current Minister of Mining Rashid Gaffar on the matter and the Minister promised to link them to financial Institutions to acquire a loan to purchase the required machines.
