Bruno Kloser, MD for Rumphi based Chombe Coal Mine (CCM) has hailed Malawi government for securing Covid-19 vaccine which, he says, has given hope to the mining industry.
Kloser’s remarks comes barely days after the Presidential Task Force on Covid (PTFC) announced that, government has finally settled for AstraZanac as the country’s Covid-19 vaccine option. The task force said the first consignment of the vaccine will arrive in the country later this month.
The CCM director expressed optimism that, once administration of the vaccine starts, Covid-19 cases will decline and his company will be able to fully execute its business plans including increasing its production by 20% this year to meet the growing demand for coal.
“Our main challenge been the uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 pandemic which has affected our operations,” he said, adding that the procurement of the vaccine brings a sigh of relief to their business plans.
“Fortunately we have not had any direct signs of the pandemic at our place and we observe all preventive measures. Like anybody else, we hope that this Covid wave will subside as soon as the vaccines arrives,” said Kloser.
Despite the economic effects of the pandemic, CCM has not retrenched any employees like many companies in the private sector have done.
“So far we haven’t retrenched any of our staff members because we believe they would be needed in future as we intend to increase our production,” he explained.
