Chichiri Mining Cooperative head calls for dedication from members

Chichiri Mining Cooperative Society Limited (CMCSL) President Emma Adam has called for commitment among the cooperative members saying lack of dedication is frustrating the group’s efforts to contribute effectively to the development of the local mining sector.

Adam, who is also leader of Malawi Women in Mining Association (MAWIMA) said apart from lack of commitment by members, the institution also faces financial challenges, which have been compounded by the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

Established in 2011, with assistance from the Ministry of Trade through the One Village One Product (OVOP) initiative, CMCSL works with the Gemstone Association of Malawi (GAM) to add value to stones so that they fetch better prices on the market.

Adam said that the cooperative, which also provides capacity building training for its members, is one of the institutions that received a gemstone processing equipment from OVOP to help in cutting and polishing the stones but is failing to operate at full throttle because of financial problems that are compounded by lack of commitment among members.

The members are failing to pay an annual subscription fee of K7,000 which is expected to cater for the organisation’s administrative expenses and rentals.

CMCSL has since negotiated with the Department of Mines in the Ministry of Mining to provide them with free office space..

Adam emphasized that small scale mining can only make headway, if vibrant associations with serious members are harnessed to achieve access to reliable formal markets, skills development trainings and acquire bank loans as development financing.

Ministry of Mining spokesperson, Sangwani Phiri, concurred with Adam saying that local miners can only benefit from their work if they work in registered and licensed cooperatives.
