Met. warns on rising temperatures

By Bester Kayaye

The Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services has advised the general public to drink adequate water as rising temperatures are expected to continue until Thursday, November 12, 2020.

A statement released by the Department reports that the country has recently experienced a continuous rise in temperatures caused by the very hot and sunny weather conditions.

In the statement, Jolamu Nkhokwe, the Department’s Director, explains that the situation, which has been exacerbated by an influx of warm and dry airflow from the north east, has hit the Lower Shire in Southern Malawi with extreme-heat conditions. Bangula Weather Station in Nsanje recorded the highest temperature of 45 degrees Celsius.

However, Nkhokwe says the high temperatures are “pre-seasonal heating of the atmosphere, which is a needed requirement to attract weather systems that generate the first rains in the country”.

He warned that during these hot weather conditions, people can experience tiredness or heat- stroke, a condition that is experienced when the body is not able to properly cool itself by sweating.

“As the public is experiencing this extreme-heat weather conditions due to high temperatures the public is encouraged to drink plenty of water, even if not feeling thirsty, and to avoid drinks with caffeine. Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing. Slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day.”
