Media key in combating corruption – ACB

Journalists have been challenged to step-up their efforts in investigating and reporting corruption in the country.

Egrita Ndala, Principal Public Relations Officer for the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) made the challenge as the country grapple with rampant corruption which has crippled many public offices and the national economy.

Ndala made the remarks last Friday when her organization engaged journalists under Blantyre Press Club to remind them that the media has a vital role in fighting corruption.

“The media is instrumental in raising awareness, whistle blowing, dispensing information loudly and widely as well as to make the public understand how the ACB operates,” she said pointing out: “Malawi recognizes corruption as one of the major impediments to national development targets since it derails social and economic development resulting in poor service delivery.”

Journalists are among the main stakeholders in the National Anti-Corruption Strategy II (NACS ii), which was developed as Malawi’s blueprint for a corrupt free society.

The Malawi government has adopted various models aimed at curbing the malpractice and recently, the country aligned its legal framework to meet international standards such as the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC).

Currently the Corrupt Practices Act (CPA) is a major lever of legislation governing anti-corruption strides in Malawi.

Ndala also disclosed that the ACB has acquired different models including digital based forensic data investigations.

The graft-bursting body’s PR expert, however, revealed that her organization faces challenges including lack of resources, high public expectations and interference from various stakeholders which usually jeopardizes the body’s investigations at times.

In his remarks after the workshop, Blantyre Press Club President Blessings Kanache commended ACB for organising the orientation session which he acknowledged was an eye opener for most journalists.

Kanache said; “The session was very insightful as most of the attendees are journalists that have just joined the industry and are not much familiar with terminologies on how they can report on corruption.”
