Malawi Govt. advances plans to construct netball stadium in Blantyre

The Malawi Government is advancing with plans to construct a national netball stadium at Njamba Park in Blantyre.
The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture says in a statement that it is, currently, inviting sealed bids from eligible contractors registered with National Construction Industry Council in the unlimited category to submit bids for the construction works.
The works will involve construction and completion of an indoor sports arena complete with associated external works.
The development follows President Peter Mutharika’s remarks in the run up to the 2019 tripartite elections that his government will develop sports facilities to create employment opportunities for the youth.
Mutharika pledged to construct stadiums in every district and for the big clubs Be Forward Wanderers and Nyasa Big Bullets.
Currently, the Ministry is also receiving tenders from eligible bidders for construction of Wanderers and Bullets stadiums in Blantyre.
In 2019/2020 budget, government allocated K200 million for the netball court and K1.6 billion for the construction of two stadiums for Wanderers and Bullets.
It also allocated K500 million each for upgrading works for Mzuzu Youth Centre and Kamuzu Institute for Sports.
Government has so far constructed sports stadiums in Karonga, Rumphi, Mangochi, Mulanje and Kasungu while construction is still under way for Ntcheu and Zomba Stadiums.
Malawi’s big stadiums include Nankhaka, Bingu, Silver Stadium and Civo in central region while in Blantyre there is Kamuzu and Chiwembe and in northern region there is Mzuzu stadium and Karonga.

FES to continue contributing to Malawi sports development

Leading supplier of agricultural, mining and construction equipment in Malawi, Farming and Engineering Services (FES), says it will continue supporting Malawi’s sports.

Group MD for FES Michael Aldworth said after FES made a contribution to Malawi National Cricket Team to participate at the Africa Cricket Association (ACA) T20 Africa cup finals in South Africa which took place from December 12 to 19, 2023.

“FES Malawi is definitely interested in growing the relationship with Malawi Cricket into the future. The value of the sponsorship is always going to depend on finding the right balance between FES’s other commitments and the requirements of Malawi Cricket,” said Aldworth.

FES Malawi was also one of the sponsors of the Malawi Hockey Association for the Africa Cup of Club Champions tournament that was held in Blantyre.

The team qualified for the ACA T20 Africa cup finals after finishing as runners up to Botswana in the Southern Africa qualifying matches in May this year. In the qualifying matches, Malawi beat Eswatini in the opening match by 53 runs before beating Mozambique in the second match by 9 wickets and Malawi also beat Mauritius by 45 runs in the third match before falling to Botswana in the fourth and final match.

This is the second time for Malawi to qualify for the ACA T20 Africa Cup finals. In their maiden campaign the team lost in the semi-final against Tanzania and finished on fourth position behind winners Uganda, second placed Tanzania and third placed Kenya.

Malawi’s second campaign at the ACA Africa T20 Cup saw the team make the semi-finals, enduring a heart breaking 4 run loss to cricketing giants Kenya and missing out on a finals berth.

However, the nation’s efforts did not go unnoticed with the selection of three of its players for the ACA Africa XI.

Corporate networking sports festival on the cards

Inspire Marketing Group has organised an inter-company sporting festival titled “Corporate Carnival Malawi” slated for October 22, 2022 at Limbe Country Club in Blantyre.

CEO for Inspire Marketing Group, Corporate Carnival Malawi, Ausa Kamanga, said in an interview that the country’s first ever sporting get-together for companies is aimed at enhancing networking amongst players working in various corporate bodies with an aim to foster progressive working relationship.

The event will see employees representing different companies participate in different sporting disciplines compete for individual glory and company pride.

Kamanga explained that the event will also provide participating companies an ideal opportunity for team building, networking as well as boosting employees’ morale and pride.

“For sponsors and merchants, it is a well-defined target market for brand awareness activities and the promotion of products and services,” said enthusiastic Kamanga, who promised “an interactive fun filled-day with sports, games, music, performances, competitions, fitness and other entertaining activities.”

Competitive games lined up for the day include football, (for both men and women), netball, volleyball, basketball, tennis and a company winning the maximum medals across sporting categories will win the ultimate corporate trophy.

“To establish its course of promoting fitness and a healthy lifestyle among corporates, the festival will offer its patrons free aerobics sessions, yoga, blood pressure and sugar level checks and expert dietary tips.” she said

Malawi Govt. to construct Olympic Sports Village

The Malawi Government is seeking to prequalify contractors for construction of Olympic Sports Village at Kamuzu Institute of Sports in         Lilongwe.

The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture says in a statement the facility, which will be used to host 2022 Africa Olympics Sports games, will include a swimming pool complex (50m competitive 25 learners’ pools) and ancillary facilities.

“Identification of interested and potential bidders for the construction of the facility shall follow the prequalification procedure used under the two-stage tendering method as an important phase in the procurement strategy being employed,” says the Ministry.

The Ministry is inviting eligible bidders who are currently registered in the unlimited category for building contractors with the National Construction Industry Council of Malawi and any interested international contractors that are registered in the equivalent category in their respective countries to collect prequalification questionnaire documents from its offices in Lilongwe.

It says prequalification documents should be returned to its internal procurement committee by Thursday, December 5 and interested contractors or their representatives and members of the general public may attend the opening of bids on Tuesday, December 24, 2019.

“It is the responsibility of each interested contractor to ensure that documents are submitted in accordance with ‘The pre-qualification requirements’ in the documents, as non-compliance will lead to disqualification and rejection of the contractor.

Bids shall be valid for 30 days.
