Mulanje Cedar restoration efforts face setbacks

By Noel Mkwaila

Mulanje Mountain Conservation Trust says it has managed to plant almost 800-thousand of Malawi’s protected tree species Mulanje Cedar on Mulanje Mountain.

The restoration exercise follows years of depletion after illegal loggers trafficked it to foreign countries while other traders sold it for wood or charcoal.

The Trust’s Environmental Education and Communication Officer Kondwani Chamwala says there is hope that the scarce cedar tree species will be fully restored on the mountain.

According to Chamwala, together with community members, the Trust managed to plant over 750,000 cedar tree seedlings between 2018 and 2020 and that it is still working on planting more.

“In the previous three years, we managed to plant over 800,000 trees and last year alone, we planted 150 thousand trees of cedar and its supporting species,” Chamwala says.

Chamwala, however, says despite making progress, the Trust has failed to meet the estimated 1-million trees it estimated to plant in the previous three tree planting seasons.

He says the Trust has managed to secure the trust of community members to work hand in hand in the restoration exercise. Community members have been mobilized to form environmental forums where authorities equip them with knowledge on how to plant and take care of the Cedar tree seedling until it reaches the point where it can be planted on the mountain.

But Chamwala expresses worry over the continued wild bush fires on the mountain, saying they retard progress on the restoration exercise.

Chamwala alleges that some people set the fire as a sign of anger when authorities restrain them against sand mining, burning charcoal or cutting down trees within the mountain.

Despite the limitations the Covid-19 has put on public gatherings, the Mulanje Mountain Conservation Mountain Trust has intensified mass awareness campaigns on dangers of deforestation to contain the situation,

In October last year, fire destroyed at least 60 hectares of newly planted Cedar trees.

Environmental experts have also suggested the need to equip people living around the forest reserve areas with alternative income generating activities to avoid wanton felling of the trees and encroachment into the protected areas.
