Nyasa Mining Cooperative Society, which represented Malawi at the recent International Import Export Expo in Shanghai, China, has described Malawi’s participation at the event as very beneficial in the promotion of artisanal and small scale mining in the country.
The Cooperative’s Chairman Percy Maleta told Mining & Trade Review that his cooperative managed to strike draft contracts for a number of Malawi’s mining products including beryl ore, lead ore, rose, clear quarts and other gemstones.
He advised local ASMs to work together to ensure adequate supply of the mining products to meet the demands of the contracts which his cooperative penned at the event.
“One thing for sure is that if we can join hands and work together on these contracts we are destined for greatness. It is high time, we ASMs, stopped complaining and started working as a team.”
The local ASMs were among participants from 150 countries who showcased their products at the international Import Export Expo.
Maleta said there is need for Malawi to participate in more of such international exhibitions because marketing of mining products is an ongoing exercise.
“It is high time the Malawi Government, donors and the corporate world scaled up interest to sponsor more ASMs to attend such global events to market the country’s gemstones and learn best practices from other countries which are stars in the industry,” said Maleta.
Malata said it was unfortunate that Malawi’s ASM subsector was only represented by two individuals while neighboring Zambia had over 30 ASMs at the Expo accompanied by their minister responsible for mines, principal secretaries, ambassador, high ranking government officials and reporters, and they had eight pavilions.
Maleta also said that at the expo, Nyasa attended three supply and demand match making meetings and which were all very successful.
The Bank of China was the main sponsor of the event and facilitated the meetings.
“Of course challenges will always be there, as small scale businesses it is a huge risk to even consider participating, but we are people who have always taken risks so money or no money these are the shows to participate if we are to strike meaningful deals,” he said.
The expo took place from November 5-10 2019 and had about 1000 booths with over 100,000 visitors.
The Nyasa mining Cooperative a couple of months ago also attended another expo in Beijing, China.
