EGENCO to commence Kapichira rehabilitation works in July

By Saidi Winnes

Electricity Generation Company (EGENCO) says it will commence reconstruction works on Kapichira power station, which was damaged by floods caused by Cyclone Ana, on July 1 this year.

EGENCO says in a Press Release that the civil works, which will take 3-6 months, will start after completion of the Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP) for phase 1 works.

It says a consultant has already been engaged to work on the ESMP, and is expected to complete the assignment by mid-June.

“The actual reconstruction works will commence after conclusion of the ESMP and conclusion of procurement services of Engineering consultants and a contractor. Preliminary documents were submitted to the Public Procurement and Disposal of Assets (PPDA) and a No-objection was granted for EGENCO to conduct a restricted tender for the reconstruction works,” the statement reads.

The rehabilitation works of the power plant will be in two phases and in the first phase the contractor will temporarily reconstruct a cofferdam around the mouth of the damaged fuse plug and redirect water to the intake to resume power generation while in the second phase the contractor will reconstruct dam structure with an improved design that will be resilient to the frequent floods the country is experiencing as a result of climate change and catchment area degradation.

EGENCO will finance the works using proceeds of US$60-financing that the Malawi Government has secured from the World Bank to cater for the energy sector’s Emergency Power Restoration Project following destruction of power infrastructure for both EGENCO and Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) by Cyclone Ana disaster.
