Malawi Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima has called on government agencies responsible for environmental affairs and other relevant stakeholders to spearhead sustainable practices under the newly launched national cleanup initiative.
Chilima made the call on Friday when he officially initiated the cleanup campaign in the populous Ndirande Township in Blantyre City where he also led residents in sweeping and cleaning the market area to set an example.
Said the vice president: “This exercise should not just be a one day activity but citizens and relevant stakeholders including local councils should take it upon themselves to ensure that the objective of the exercise is attained.”
He called on citizens to uphold and embrace the concept bearing in mind the health benefits and other positive factors that such activities can bring to households and communities.
Commenting, Deputy Minister of Local Government, Halima Daudi pledged to rally behind the campaign by rolling out various projects aimed at elevating living standards of people across the country’s local councils.
“Our ministry will facilitate environmental friendly activities in rural areas and we pledge to support the sustainability of these activities in all local councils,” she said
President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera last Wednesday launched the National Clean Up Day campaign at Chinsapo Community Ground in Lilongwe to curb littering and promote cleanliness and safe environments.
